Participation in celebration events is obligatory

April 15th is Kim Il Sung’s birthday and is called the “Sunday Festival”. Celebration event is held on this day.

On this day, both cities and villages displayed their national flags, on the street in the square, on the front of the building, “Holidays 4 and 15”, “My party and the adorable leaders of the people, Kim Il Sung, all the best!” “Great “Let’s pray for the long lifelessness of the leader.” On this day, there are countless flowers that can be used for the statues of Kim Il Sung built throughout the country. In Pyongyang, ikebana is planted in a huge concrete-shaped flower bed made of concrete along the main street. In 1990, even when it was 78 years old, Ikebana was adorned in more than 700 places in the capital. (Alexandre Zhebin, “The Kim Dynasty I saw”)

In this event, it is customary to give offerings to the bronze statue of Kim Il Sung.

On April 14th and 15th, there was a constant flow of people aiming for a thirty-meter bronze statue standing in the center of Pyongyang and Mansudae. At the foot of the statue, there are hundreds of buds, pots and thousands of bouquets with ikebana. Here, exotic fruit tree branches made of ripe fruits, such as lemons and tangerines, are put in a basket and delivered as a “loyalty gift”. On the red ribbon tied to the casket, the leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea “Pray for Health and Longevity”, the Korean Labor Party Central Committee, the central authority of the state power, social organizations, business establishments, facilities, revolutionary rebel family, etc. I can see the letters. In 1987, after the celebration of Kim Il Sung’s 75th birthday, changes were made to the ritual under the statue and the official color was reduced. At least in recent years, there has been no flower offering from the Party Central Committee, Central People’s Committee, or the State Council. It seems to have replaced the flower arrangements of the main political officers and the secretaries of the Central Committee. (Id.)

How big is this celebration, which includes not only domestic government officials but also foreign government officials?

According to the Labor Newspaper, seventy-five heads of foreign countries and government leaders visited Mankeidai in the five years from 1982 to 1987, and two from more than 50 countries on five continents. More than 2 million people including 32,000 foreigners in 1989 alone. In 1982, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Kim Il Sung, the main idea tower was erected repeatedly, and over 10 million people looked at this triumphal arch, that is, about half of the country’s population and foreign countries. More than 134,000 people have visited. (Id.)

Participation in the celebration is obligatory and the residents are forced to bear the burden.

It is the duty of North Korean residents to visit the “Grand Revolutionary Globe”, including the Manjangdai, and it takes a lot of time for this, but it should not be assumed that this will be financed by the national funds. Even if you take only 12 days of paid holidays a year, it is “the highest honor” for the people of this country to worship the holy land. (Id.)
